For those students who need to come before 7:30, Newport Grammar offers a daycare service that parents may want to consider. There is a charge for these services but it will take students beginning at 6:30 each morning. Please contact Stacy Dawson at 625-0323 if you need more information. Students need to be picked up by 3:15 unless staying after school for tutoring or study hall. Our daycare provides after school care for students. Science Lab Provides Hands On Learning |
Our students are now discovering a new way of learning science. They are now allowed and encouraged to experience this subject through various hands-on activities. Each grade level comes to the science lab once a week for an average of one hour. Here they explore each expected learning standard in a new and exciting way. The classroom teachers as well as the science lab instructor are on hand to guide them through each experience.
At the end of the school year, each child will have been exposed to major laboratory equipment. All grades complete mini courses in microscope use and triple beam balances. The metric system is in continual use in the measurements of length, volume, mass, and area. Our students are encouraged to think globally on many issues and will be well acclimated to the scientific community's body of knowledge.
Two goals are set for the science lab. Number one is to simply
learn
by
doing.
Number two is to have
fun!
Student excitement is nearly tangible when dissections are near. Fourth grade will be examining an owl pellet and classifying actual bones they find. Fifth grade has so far enjoyed creating cell models that mysteriously appeared as water balloons. Some sixth graders have possibly complained of counting beans while in actuality they were mimicking biological mark and recapture methods to estimate the population of particular organisms. Playing with play-dough may sound elementary, but our seventh graders enjoyed creating cell models labeling all major cell organelles. Of course eighth grade gets to have the most fun by creating paper pets and allowing them to have off spring and analyzing their genetic make-up. Each grade level benefits from the experience and looks forward to returning. No day has passed without hearing the question, "What are we doing in science lab next week?"

Newport Grammar Goes Green |
Newport Grammar School has "Gone Green" and is in partnership with "Keep Cocke County Beautiful" to make a difference in our environment. At the beginning of this school year we joined the green movement by agreeing to work toward recycling all paper products . The school was outfitted with a special outdoor recycling bin to collect mixed paper and is eager to receive smaller bins for individual classrooms and offices in our school. The bins are being provided through grant money received by "Keep Cocke County Beautiful." Mixed paper is easy to spot once you get started. Our teachers and students are making a conscious effort to recycle items like magazines, notebook paper, copy paper, newspapers, junk mail, etc. We hope this effort will carry over into the homes and more people will join us in this endeavor to save landfill space.

New Law Regarding Hiring of School Staff |
Effective July 1, 2007, school systems are prohibited from hiring any individual whom the department of children's services has found to have committed abuse against a child or whose name has been placed on the state's vulnerable person's registry or the state's sex offender registry. School systems are required to submit the names of all potential employees to DCS prior to employment to determine if the potential employees were found by DCS to have committed child abuse. This will be in addition to the criminal history record check conducted by the TBI.

ESL Students Receive Attention |
Newport Grammar School is now providing English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring for any student in kindergarten through eighth grade who doesn't speak English at home or whose native language is not English. Eighth grade language arts teacher Lenora Douglas recently earned an additional endorsement on her teacher's license that qualifies her to teach English as a Second Language. Mrs. Douglas's primary goal is to give extra assistance to her ESL students' individual needs. However, Tennessee has an ESL curriculum in place, and all ESL students are required to take an achievement test, the English Language Development Assessment (ELDA), as well as the TCAP test each year. Mrs. Douglas says she is excited to have the opportunity to provide extra help and support for students who may otherwise fall behind because of language barriers. The ESL tutoring class meets after school on three days a week in Mrs. Douglas's classroom
