Tennessee School Board Association Grants "Excellence in Education" Award to Linda Branam

The Tennessee School Board Board of Directors has granted an award for Excellence in Education Programs to Linda Branam and Newport City Schools for its "After-School Attention" program.

The " After- School Attention" is a unique detention and rehabilitation program for kindergarten through eighth grade students in our school.  When a student is assigned to After-School  ATTENTION, the referral notice lists the reason for referral, usually including a brief descriptive narrative of the misbehavior.

Mrs. Branam who is director of After-School ATTENTION, carefully reads the referral slips, and then chooses appropriate guidance lessons to fit the "offense".  For instance, if a student has repeatedly not completed schoolwork, he must talk to the counselor, often watch an age-graded video on responsibility, then work on completing unfinished assignments.

Consideration is given for the behavioral reasons students are assigned to detention.  The lesson is then chosen based on the apparent needs of the students.  Bullying and anger management are top priority topics, with responsibility and self-confidence (courage), being taught frequently also.

After-School ATTENTION provides a highly- structured program of detention with the added elements of counseling, individual attention, and tutoring.  Mrs. Branam believes this to be a viable alternative to sitting around with no instruction, counseling, or positive goals.
